      Tutus Pantry

Tutu’s Pantry is a food donation program founded in 2009 by FASPS alumni parent Sophie Solomon. Through generous in-kind donations from FASPS families and other donors, Tutu’s Pantry provides food staples to families at Thurgood Marshall Elementary School, located in the Central District of Seattle.

At Thurgood Marshall Elementary School, 85% of the children in the school’s General Education Program are on the government provided Free and Reduced Lunch Program and often go hungry during the weekends because their families cannot afford to buy food. Tutu’s Pantry provides an average of 53 backpacks filled with food each week to these children.

The partnership between FASPS and Thurgood Marshall Elementary School benefits both schools by providing vital support to needy families as well as giving teachers at FASPS the opportunity to incorporate this important program into the social and emotional learning (SEL) program established at FASPS.

How Does the Program Work?

The program is voluntary and should not be a source of hardship for any participating family.

Each week, families of designated grades at FASPS can participate in the donation program by bringing food items and dropping them out in front of the library near the reception area no later than Thursday morning.

The students also have an opportunity to directly participate in the program by providing meaningful notes to children at Tutu’s Pantry and also by discussing the Tutu’s Pantry mission as part of their classroom curriculum.
