Potential trustees are recruited on an on-going basis with particular attention to strategic thinking skills as well as the necessary skills and perspectives to complement existing Board members.
Ideally, the makeup of the Board is representative of our school’s cultural, racial and ethnic diversity and includes not only parents of different school constituencies, but outside community members and leaders as well. Recruitment generally focuses on individuals who have clearly demonstrated a commitment to the school and detailed written nominations from the broader school community are welcome. Depending on the needs of the Board, candidates may be: asked to join one of the many Board committees; placed in the nominee pool for future years; or in cases where there is a fit to fill an immediate Board need, a candidate will be asked to serve on the Board. The chair of the Committee on Trustees (defined below) is the point of contact for inquiries into current Board needs or the nomination process.
The Committee on Trustees is responsible for identifying, recruiting, evaluating and nominating potential trustees for election by the Board. This committee is also responsible for the ongoing orientation and training of Trustees and conducting an annual self-evaluation of the Board of Trustees. The Committee chair is appointed by the Board Chair and committee members are appointed by the Committee chair.
The Board of Trustees is made up of five categories of members: General Trustees, the Head of School, the President of the Parent Professor Committee, a Faculty Representative and Honorary Trustees. There may be between six and fifteen General Trustees, each serving a maximum of 2 three-year terms. General Trustee candidates are proposed to the Board by the Committee on Trustees and voted on by the entire Board at the annual meeting, held in May or June.
